'Star Trek 2' Release Date: Paramount Lands 'Trek' Sequel on May 17, 2013

Holding your breath for 'Star Trek 2?' You'll have to hold it for nearly another year. The sci-fi sequel was originally slated for a June 29, 2012 release, but has just been bumped back to May 17, 2013 where it will take the spot vacated by Roland Emmerich's 'Singularity,' which moves to November 2013. The entire cast is set to return for the sequel, which will be shot in 3D. J.J. Abrams, who's co-writing the follow-up to his 2009 reboot, was too busy with 'Super 8' to hit the original deadline; the June 2012 slot now goes to 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation.' The apparently flexible deals for the cast -- including stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto -- allowed Paramount to wait until Abrams and his writers were ready to begin work on the second go-round of the Enterprise crew. The studio is obviously hoping for another hit: The revamped 'Star Trek' earned $258 million in North America and $130 million internationally. Chicago shows penchant for tuners

Chicago is not noted for its musicals, however with new infrastructure popping up, the winds of change are coming within the Windy City.Gotham hits "August: Osage County," "A Stable Rain" and "Destroyed" all began in Chi-town, seeming to determine a core of the trademark for brand new legit work emerging in the area: intense, serious and filled with emotion. But foot-tapping tuners? Less.Yesteryear several several weeks , however, happen to be especially robust for Chicagoland tuners, recommending that musical rise in the town might be where play development involved ten years approximately ago.New tuners have created out a Windy City footprint well past the Nederlander Org's Broadway in Chicago commercial venues or even the three-plus-year ongoing run of "Billion Dollar Quartet," which is constantly on the re-cast and extend. Chicago Shakespeare leads the means by creating a growing infrastructure for brand new musicals within the city, with two effective tuners on its boards: Gary Griffin ("The Colour Crimson") directs a scaly-lower, strikingly emotional "Follies" and "Murder for 2,Inch a brand new musical comedy romp approximately Agatha Christie and Charles Ludlam, using the two entertainers also supplying the piano accompaniment, has turned into a lengthy-lasting surprise hit around the theater's second stage, running since May. The show just obtained a Shaun Award for brand new musical, discussing it having a Second City revue."Musicals in Chicago possess a really wealthy history," states Ron Boynton, Chicago Shakespeare's creative producer, who adds musical theater in Chicago is within a resurgent condition that recalls the glory times of local orgs Candlelight Theater and Drury Lane Water Tower Place. "I believe there's been a cycle, and today this is an exciting, prolific, bold time."Boynton selects artists first after which works together with them to locate a project. Within the summer time, the theater staged a brand new family musical undertake "Pinocchio" by "The Storyline of My Existence" designers Neil Bartram and John Hill. Formerly, Boynton had fostered the introduction of "Funk Up About Nuthin'," a Shakespeare adaptation through the Q Siblings -- Jeffrey (JQ) and Gregory (GQ) Qaiyum -- that opened in the theater, and it has since been observed in London, Edinburgh and Australia. The connection is ongoing, using the theater and also the Q's focusing on "Madsummer Night's Dream" along with a stylish-hop "Othello." Until Chicago Shakespeare ramped up its musical programming profile, the larger implies that were not Broadway tryouts or tours were staged mostly within the and surrounding suburbs. In August, the Marriott Theater in Lincolnshire, Ill., mounted the planet premiere of "For that Boys," in line with the Bette Midler-James Caan film about USO entertainers. The coming year it'll produce "Hero," a good ambitious comicbook author. The Marriott boasts among the biggest subscription bases in the united states, pushing 37,000, and signifies a unique corporate-possessed, for-profit regional model, with all of costs met by ticket sales."That poses a large challenge to doing new work, that is a lot more than two times as costly (as tours)," states professional director Terry James. Nevertheless its large base of customers provides sufficient to safeguard the theater to build up a minumum of one new musical every couple of years. In possibly the boldest growth and development of all, the Vital Theater in Aurora, about 50 miles west from the city, has started creating its very own season instead of depending on tours. Run by artistic director Jim Corti (who spent 2 yrs playing Tateh in "Ragtime" on Broadway and became one of Chicago's leading director-choreographers), the Vital released the programming initiative with "My Fair Lady," selling a decent 18,000 tickets. The needed-opened up "Frederick and also the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" has offered 21,000. Both productions repetition solid tour-quality work.Corti, in addition to Boynton and James, all express hope that new productions in the Vital will raise the ability for that top musical entertainers to earn a living within the city, which isn't as easy for gamers residing in Gotham. The Marriott, for instance, earns in regards to a third of their casts from NY. Corti aims eventually to build up new work. "We now have our eyes on as being a pre-Broadway house," he states. But for the time being, he must build a crowd with familiar game titles. "It's frightening as hell." Because of the costs and also the lengthy timeline associated with developing new tuners, it's unlikely that Chicago's famous store theaters could possibly get in around the act how they have with nonmusical work. Nevertheless, Black Ensemble Theater within the Uptown neighborhood from the city finds a effective niche with bio-musicals. Wager opens its new $20 Million cultural center a few days ago having a remount of their 2000 show "The Jackie Wilson Story," which continued tour starring Chester Gregory II, together with a 2003 visit Harlem's Apollo Theater. The middle may have a 299-chair mainstage, double the amount capacity from the company's previous home.Suburban stores have, once more, been very likely towards musicals than individuals within the city. Next Theater in Evanston produced composer Josh Schmidt's "The Adding Machine" (which continued to experience Off Broadway) and Authors Theater in Glencoe developed his follow-up, "A Minister's Wife," that was then staged at Lincoln subsequently Center.Authors, with houses that chair just 40 and 108, is definitely an unlikely spot for musical development, but it is switched its size into a benefit and centered on adaptations. "Each bit will get its very own customized tabs on development," states connect artistic director Stuart Carden, who runs new work, "and we are devoted to seeing them right through to production." The theater just held a extended workshop for any musical version from the Charles Mee play "Summer season," and it is at the office on Schmidt's adaptation from the Gogol short story "The Heavyweight coat."The first kind began in the Music Theater Company, a venture founded in 2008 and centered on musical development. The organization made a reasonable impression the town of Highland Park granted it using a 92-chair space this year. It had formerly been occupied through the Apple Tree Theater, a musical company that went defunct last year. There is not a much better example to the fact that musical theater within the Chicago area has survived its share of challenges, but certainly seems around the upswing. n Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Academy awards: Billy Very Set As (New) Host Tom Sherak On Oscar Drama: Were Days In Front Of Schedule Monday morning Brett Ratner was creating the Academy awards (with Don Mischer) and Eddie Murphy was our prime profile host. 72 hours later John Grazer is creating (with Don Mischer) and Billy Very may be the host. Apart from that nothing’s new. Clearly the Academy felt the necessity to act with lightning speed to be able to change the P.R. debacle Brett Ratner triggered together with his unfortunate and offensivecomments in a number of forums within the last week. They've done exactly that, and even though they attempted within the recent pastto get youthful ,stylish and various with a few of their options, this season because of their chaotic character the 84th Annual Oscars have previously adopted (also it’sonly November) they're playing it safe. 63 years old Billy Very was the apparent choice within this scenario and that he is traveling in to triumphantly save the Academy awards just like he's done previously. I had been type of rooting for that Muppets to find the job however i guess they didn’t are able. In August Very had sent strong signals he was prepared to host the Academy awards again “one or two moretimes” and that i authored then this would be a perfect chance to obtain him in the fold since he hadn’t located since 2004 (he did the gig 8 occasions between 1990 and 2004) and maybe it's a boon to his diminishing movie career. However after Ratner was named producer I requested him about Billy and that he sloughed from the question saying the Academy had given him until mid-September to locate a host and wasn’t considering it. He then overlooked Very’s public overture and opted for Murphy , his Tower Heist star. Earlier around at another appearance following this past year’s Oscar show when he came onto a standing ovation by way of thanking frequent host, the lateBob Expect the Oscar reminiscences, younger crowd indicated he may be prepared to return towards the show but Only when they fixed some things. If he meant reducing the amount of on-air honours , no way. The Board just won’t do this. Now Very is visiting the show inside a different situation and also the best factor he is able to do would be to unveil the very best ‘Billy Very Oscar show host’ bits he’s got. He should return to what's always labored for him, place themself into film clips from the nominees and sing a medley. Inevitably he is going to do might the comforting of a routine ofit allwill be what the Academy awards need this season after being released of the week’s debacle and this past year’s poorly received show. In 1990 Very rode to save the day together with his first Oscar hosting gigafter the disaster of the year before’s Allan Carr show by which Take advantage of Lowe sang with Snow Whitened. This season history repeats itself and Very has returned in order to save the Academy awards from themselves all over again. You decide to go, Billy!

PHOTOS: MIPCOM 2011's Most Buzzed-About Projects Now Transporter production manager Anna Beben on Thursday in an internal e-mail to talent and crew reports cameras are not likely to roll again before the end of the year. "It appears that Chris' recovery is going to take a little longer than we had anticipated. Chris has not been cleared for work and will be reassessed in 3 weeks," Beben's memo stated. The word from the producers is the Prison Break star walks with a limp, leaving him unable to perform required action sequences. Beben added the Transporter producers -- Canada's QVF Inc. and French partner Atlantique Productions -- may prove reluctant to restart production for one episode, only to shut down again for Christmas. STORY: 'Transporter' Retools By Hiring Steve Shill and Karen Wookey For Production Supervision "The producers may decide that it is best to simply return in the new year," Beben wrote. Vance's health is only the latest challenge to beset the production-plagued Transporter shoot. The action series went through major creative changes when British director Steve Shill (Rome, Dexter) replaced the original Canadian showrunners Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. Shill then did a cull of Transporter crew and creative in Toronto, making key replacements in a bid to get the production back on track and avoid cost-overruns. EXCLUSIVE: 'Transporter': 'Lost's' Stephen Williams to Helm Pilot The Canadian and French producers have also faced an uphill creative challenge to adapt Besson's fast-paced, iconic film franchise into a one hour TV series. Then came the injury to Vance, who stars as Frank Martin, an ex-elite commando turned transporter, delivering mysterious packages against all odds for a series of shady and dangerous clients. The action series initially shot on location in Europe in June before shifting to Toronto in July. The original schedule had Transporter shooting here through November. Exclusive 'My Week With Marilyn' Clip: Michelle Williams Certainly Can Can-Can

Before starring opposite Sir Laurence Olivier in 'The Prince and the Showgirl,' Marilyn Monroe appeared with Ethel Merman and Donald O'Connor in Irving Berlin's 'There's No Business Like Show Business,' and brought the house down with her rendition of "Heat Wave." That song-and-dance performance is how the new film about Monroe, 'My Week With Marilyn,' begins, and while the scene isn't a shot-for-shot remake of the 'Show Business' classic, star Michelle Williams more than holds her own. In fact, she certainly can can-can. (Couldn't help it.) Watch below, but make sure to turn your thermostat down before viewing -- this clip could melt your computer. Out in limited release on Nov. 23, 'My Week With Marilyn' stars Williams as Monroe, Kenneth Branagh as Sir Laurence Olivier and Eddie Redmayne as Colin Clark, the boy who falls for Hollywood's most famous blonde bombshell.
