Wolverine 2 Won't Happen This Fall, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today
Also in this Thursday edition of The Broadsheet: Shawn Levy wants Frankenstein… Rob Corddry could be a Warm body… R.I.P.D. gets a supermodel to play Jeff Bridges… and more ahead. · The long, strange trip that has become The Wolverine keeps getting longer. Deadline reports that Fox is unlikely to start filming the X-Men prequel sequel with Hugh Jackman and new director James Mangold this fall, because of continued concern for the Japan-based shoot as well as Jackman’s commitment to Les Miserables. No official date has been set just yet, but Wolverine 2 might not start production until the spring 2012. Stay tuned… [Deadline] · Speaking of seemingly-never-happening projects: Shawn Levy might put Fantastic Voyage on the back burner to direct Frankenstein for Fox. Per Deadline, “the studio is eager to get out in front of the seven other Frankenstein films that are percolating all over town.” Seven! Seven’s the key number here. [Deadline] · Funny funnyman Rob Corddry is in final negotiations to join Nicholas Hoult and Theresa Palmer in the zombie love story Warm Bodies. 50/50’s Jonathan Levine will direct. [Variety] · Another day, another indie movie for Alexander Skarsgard to circle. The hunky True Blood star is attached to Disconnect, about how the Internet can… ruins lives. Skarsgard will play a former Marine who — while facing financial strife — strikes up an affair thanks to his loveless marriage. Original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Michael Nyqvist is in the cast as well. [Variety] · Chaz Palminteri is set to play Paul Castellano in Gotti: The Shadow of My Father. The Bronx Tale star previously played the doomed mobster in the TNT movie Boss of Bosses, but he’s excited to start up on the Barry Levinson-directed production. “I have seen this film come together from the very start and am pleased to be able to work alongside such great talent to bring this story to the bigscreen.” Al Pacino, John Travolta and Ben Foster co-star. [Variety] · Schwentke, Schwentke, Schwentke! Robert Schwentke has cast supermodel Marisa Miller as Jeff Bridges’s human avatar — “the form humans see when Bridges’s character is in his earthly form” — in R.I.P.D. Of course he has! The supernatural action movie follows two deceased cops (Bridges and Ryan Reynolds) working at the “Rest in Peace Department, a police force comprised of ghosts who battle spirits unready to depart this world.” [THR/Heat Vision]
Witnesses
Three Croatian soldiers try to plant a bomb at the home of a Serb alleged to be a smuggler and black marketer. Startled to find him home -- he is supposed to be away -- they are forced to shoot him. Then they discover a witness whom they capture and hide in a garage belonging to the mother of one soldier. An honest cop and a female journalist launch separate investigations of the crimes. Then a crippled soldier the boyfriend of the journalist and the mothers elder son returns home and more secrets and lies spill out. The different viewpoints reveal the interconnections of nearly everyone in the small town a microcosm for what happened in Croatia where everyone in a sense bore witness to crimes committed during the war.
Christian Bale Considering Oldboy Remake
Along with a slew of other possibilitiesWhat it is to be wanted... Though he's busy being Batman for what will likely be the last time in The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale has a raft of possible future options stretched out ahead of him, according to Variety. Yes, he's being courted by various studios for all sorts of movies, including the remake of Oldboy and Clint Eastwood's take on A Star is Born. At this time, Bale hasn't made any decisions, but it must be nice to have the choice. Let's run down the possibilities, shall we?Spike Lee is on board to direct the Oldboy reboot for Mandate, and Bale is being offered the role of the villain who incarcerates the hero in a nondescript room for 15 years, a plan that seemingly continues even when he's released and sets about tracking down his captors. Eastwood is apparently considering him as a solid male lead for A Star is Born, which would find him mentoring Beyonce and falling for the rising starlet even as his own career fades. Then there's Michael Mann's Gold, about which little is known, but apparently takes the form of a modern-day Treasure of the Sierra Madre-style adventure with prospectors searching for the shiny stuff. In the lesser-known file, we have Out of the Furnace, the film formerly known as The Low Dweller, a tale of a criminal name Slim avenging the murder of his brother. That has Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper in charge. And finally, in the epic corner, Darren Aronofsky has Noah, which would follow the building of the Biblical Ark. As mentioned, he's sticking to the idea that he wants to wait and see, and more importantly get finished with Caped Crusading before he fills the ol' work diary back up, and that means he won't be available until the end of the year at the earliest. Plus, he could turn around and reject all of these options, though we must admit it's a tempting bunch for any actor...

Paul Rudd Embraces 'Idiot' Side
LOS ANGELES (AP) For more than a decade, Paul Rudd has served as a comedic chameleon, effortlessly moving from sidekick ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin") to scene stealer ("Knocked Up," ''Forgetting Sarah Marshall") to straight man ("Dinner for Schmucks," ''I Love You, Man"). He's tackling his most transformative role yet in "Our Idiot Brother."The affable 42-year-old actor grew his hair and beard out last summer to portray Ned, an easygoing organic farmer whose lack of ambition and independence continually frustrate his family. Rudd developed the earnest character with friend-neighbor-director Jesse Peretz. (The pair first worked together on the 2002 improvisational comedy "The Chateau.")The indie dramedy, which was snapped up by The Weinstein Co. at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is distinctly different from any of the other movies listed on Rudd's seemingly never-ending resume. It's not as silly as "Role Models" or "Dinner for Schmucks" nor is it as serious as "The Cider House Rules" or "The Shape of Things.""It's just like life," Rudd recently said over breakfast. "It's not unrealistic or a cliche. That's one of the things I really liked about this project. There's a definitive point of view. To me, the character wasn't just about his look: the long hair, the beard, the Crocs. Those are external things. He's just a good guy who's into bio-dynamic farming."After being released from prison for selling marijuana to a uniformed police officer, Ned becomes entangled in the lives of his three sisters: free-loving Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), career-focused Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and perfection-seeking Liz (Emily Mortimer). Rudd has a younger sister, but their real-life relationship didn't inspire him."That was probably more of an influence on my decision to pursue acting as a career," said Rudd. "I think I knew I wanted to do this in high school, but the seeds were probably planted at a much younger age. My sister was born two and a half years after me. It was the perfect age for me to not know what to do and to want to turn the attention back to me."As a teenager with a penchant for public speaking growing up in Overland Park, an idyllic Kansas City suburb, Rudd's high school classmate Sean Tevis recalled he would do things like spontaneously commandeer grocery store speaker systems to announce fictitious sales or convince his fellow yell leaders to sneak into cheerleaders' homes to invite them out."It's the kind of thing that a normal person wouldn't do," said Tevis. "Paul always had no fear of authority. I think he's just always done what he wants because it pleases him, which I guess has led him to pursue things that most people would say, 'Oh, I could never do that.' I don't think that particular thought has ever really entered his head."Rudd's unflappable nature and boyish charm led him from the land of theater, commercials and television parts in Los Angeles to his breakout brotherly role as the snarky stepbrother in 1995's "Clueless." He later relocated to New York and went on to work regularly with such playwrights and filmmakers as David Wain, Neil LaBute, Judd Apatow and Peretz.Rudd, who still lives in New York with his wife and two children, said that despite his agent's advice, he tends "not to differentiate between dramas or comedies, lead roles or supporting ones." He doesn't mind if a movie is similar to one he's already done. He's drawn to films as a whole, not just the characters he portrays. Mostly, he just wants to have fun.Rudd is currently in the middle of filming an untitled follow-up to Apatow's "Knocked Up" in Los Angeles. It focuses on the bickering sister and brother-in-law of Katherine Heigl's character that he and Leslie Mann played in the 2007 romantic comedy. It's the first time Rudd, who studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, has reprised a film role."It's been surreal," said Rudd, a stranger to sequels except for his first big part: a "Halloween" installment. "The dynamic that Leslie and I have is pretty great. There's already a familiarity with working with each other. It's been fun to play that part again. I really liked doing 'Knocked Up,' so to play that part again but to do more stuff is great."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. About That Time Taylor Lautner and Gus Van Sant Stopped by Cirque Du Soleil
Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant was once in the running to helm The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn before Bill Condon got the gig, but a July dinner outing with Taylor Lautner and Milk writer Dustin Lance Black had the gossip mill wondering if Van Sant was working on a new film with the Twilight star. This weekend the director and the erstwhile wolf boy were photographed taking in Cirque du Soleil’s IRIS: A Journey Through the World of Cinema. What could Gus ‘n’ Tay-Tay have been talking about? The backstage picture was posted to the show’s Facebook page with the following explanation: “Twilight’s Taylor Lautner and Academy Award winning Director Gus Van Sant attended the 8 pm performance of IRIS - A Journey Through The World of Cinema last night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles (Sat, Aug 13). Guests of IRIS Music Composer Danny Elfman, the duo went backstage to meet the cast of IRIS following the performance.” After his July photo op with Van Sant and Black, Lautner played coy when asked if the trio were working on something together: “They are two talented men,” he told MTV. “You’ll see.” Our pals at Hollywood Life speculated that Van Sant and Lautner may be involved in a film adaptation of Green Day’s American Idiot, which Black is scripting, although there’s been no confirmation yet of any collaboration between the three. Which brings us to Cirque du Soleil: Could the hypothetical Van Sant-Lautner-Black collaboration have anything to do with face-painted acrobats, or perhaps composer Danny Elfman? Work in your finest speculative guesses in today’s round of “Caption This” below. [IRIS on Facebook via TwiFans]
'Boss,' 'Mythbusters' among reality noms
Once again Emmy voters left off the previous year's reality series winner from the current crop of nominees. It seems a second helping of 2010 winner "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution," which decidedly fizzled with viewers, wasn't part of this year's Emmy menu plan.Even 2009 winner "Intervention" failed to earn another return trip, although A&E's illness-related series "Hoarders" made good on its increasing popularity with a first nom. Left out was History's top-viewed and infinitely peppier look at collectors, "American Pickers."While the resurgent History didn't make an impression on voters here, Discovery had a strong showing with noms: "Hoarders" and "Mythbusters.""Hoarders" is joined in the debut circle by the cabler's ratings stalwart "Deadliest Catch," which made headlines in its sixth season for its unvarnished depiction of a popular cast member's tragic passing. Two other series set in the wilds of America's largest state had a harder time making an impression, however: Discovery's "Gold Rush: Alaska," and TLC's much-ballyhooed "Sarah Palin's Alaska."Regulars make up the rest of the bunch, including a seventh nomination for PBS mainstay "Antiques Roadshow," a sixth (and final chance) go-round for two-time winner "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," a third for fun-with-science show "Mythbusters," and a second at-bat for CBS' primetime hit Sunday night "Undercover Boss.""Antiques Roadshow"PBSWhy it might win: Long a staple in this category but always coming up short, this popular 15-seasons-strong PBS series could finally see some love for being so patient, not unlike one of the show's attic curios seeing the light of day as suddenly prized possessions.Maybe not: There's undeniable creakiness to the format and the subject matter, which might make it hard for Emmy voters to recognize it in a category known for outrageous personalities and shockable moments."Deadliest Catch"DiscoveryWhy it might win: A trend-setting ratings smash that only continues to grow, this you-are-there portrait of Alaskan king crab fishermen earned plenty of respect for its handling of the death of one of its most beloved subjects.Maybe not: The distinctly rough-hewn, profane and treacherous nature of the men's lives could make it a tough sell for more delicate Emmy-voting sensibilities. "Hoarders"A&EWhy it might win: A&E's ratings hit is a canny combo of heartbreaking family drama and psychological train-wreck parade, and its cult status shouldn't be undervalued. Like its own shame-filled participants, there are probably lots of secret "Hoarders" watchers among Academy members. Also, A&E's similar "Intervention" won this two years ago.Maybe not: Its categorically unsettling subject matter and depictions of humanity at its most self-destructive might be too much for voters."Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List"BravoWhy it might win: Outside the show's established comedy bonafides, the red-haired comedian's political side saw her venture to Sarah Palin land and to Washington, D.C., to fight for gays in the military, which could appeal to liberal-minded Emmy voters. Also, a final-season Emmy win could make for a fitting send-off.Maybe not: Will A&E's tongue-in-cheek for your consideration ad for "Hoarders" -- using Griffin's own laudatory comments -- ultimately undercut the popular funnywoman's third-time chances?"Mythbusters"DiscoveryWhy it might win: There's undeniable charm in a couple of science-minded geeks fusing pop-culture legends and what-if experimentation, and its steady appearance in this category could finally spell victory for hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage.Maybe not: The resolute un-seriousness of the show might keep it an also-ran with Emmy voters looking for a little more dramatic heft. "Undercover Boss"CBSWhy it might win: A rock-solid ratings hit for CBS, this slick, warm-hearted vision of management and workers in corporate harmony (after a bigwig pretends to be an underling) may resonate in an economically stressed time.Maybe not: The show's gimmicky predictability could turn off Emmy voters who see nothing more than an hourlong infomercial for various businesses. 'Detroit 1-8-7' Duo Re-Teams For New ABC Drama Project
EXCLUSIVE: After working together last season on the ABC/ABC Studios cop drama Detroit 1-8-7, series creator/executive producer Jason Richman and executive producer/showrunner David Zabel have teamed for a new ABC Studios drama project, which has sold to ABC. Richman and Zabel will co-write the project, titled Two Roads, which is in the vein of Sliding Doors. It centers on a young woman who struggles with doubt on her wedding day whether to go through with it or not. The show asks the question, "What if I had made different choices?", and then answers it by following her down both paths. Zabel joined the Michael Imperioli starrer Detroit 1-8-7 at the pilot stage after he liked Richman's script. Despite solid reviews, the series didn't get traction in the ratings and was canceled after its 18-episode freshman season. Both Zabel and Richman have deals at ABCS -- WME-repped Zabel is under an overall, Richman, repped by WME and the Collective, has a pact for two blind scripts. This is the second sale this season for Zabel who also has Western Gunslinger set up at ABC.

TCA: The New Adventures Of Telemundo's 'Cristina'
Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. In this year's first and probably only TCA panel to be conducted in two languages, Cuban-born journalist Cristina Saralegui spoke passionately about leaving her Miami-based Spanish-language show for Univision, El Show de Cristina, after 21 years for a new weekly talk/variety show for Telemundo. The show launches in October in conjunction with National Latino Broadcasting's The Cristina Channel, a radio network for Sirius XM.Unlike her previous program, the new show, PaLante Con Cristina, which the star will host and executive produce, will make use of translators, subtitles, and whatever it takes to make the show accessible to both Spanish- and English-speaking viewers. The show will be in Spanglish -- in my home, my kids speak both, because I dont think that you should lose a language, says Saralegui. Although she made a point of thanking Univision for her 21 years on the air, she blasted its Spanish-only policy when it comes to subtitles, comparing it to the barriers against Latino talent crossing over into the U.S. mainstream. You do exactly the same thing, she said of Univision. Telemundo doesnt do that. They know better, Im so happy. Her cross-cultural goal? To have Tom Cruise jumping on my couch, and to introduce my chickens to the (English-speaking) market. She added that she doesnt think that a star having a new project to pitch is a good reason to put that star on the air. Her stories, she said, come when a celebrity has a fight, goes to jail, their mother dies -- calls to say: Can I go on your show? And I say, 'Youre on.' " With Telemundo senior EVP Joshua Mintz at her side, Saralegui said she was grateful to Univision, but it was clear she disagreed with management about the direction of her show. I left because the upper-echelon management changed they wanted to give, according to the network, a younger image. The grandmother of two insisted that this did not mean her age -- 63 -- but the traditional style of her show. Its their network, its their job. Basically, they offered me specials. I dont think you do that to a person like me," she said. The network, she added, had told her that they wanted to give the show a new look. I said Ill think about it, and Ill get back to you. And boy, did I think about it. And Im here, she said. However, in her own version of age discrimination, Saralegui said that American soaps can't compete with Spanish-language telenovelas because they lack the latters youth appeal and snappy pacing. Its too dragged out, you cant have a soap for 30 years. It bores people, she said.
